The
University of Arkansas at Monticello
softball team moved to 10-0 with a pair
of 3-0 victories over Southern Indiana
and Quincy on the second day of the 2009
Super 8 Softball Classic.
Freshmen starting pitchers Kayla Jackson
and Randa Perry both recorded
complete-game shut-out wins aiding the
Blossoms to continue their streak to 10
consecutive wins in as many games this
season.
In the win over Southern Indiana,
Jackson (5-0) threw seven innings,
allowing only two hits, striking out
five and allowing zero walks. She
retired the final 12 batters, while only
allowing a Southern Indiana runner to
reach scoring position once.
Offensively, the Blossoms scored all
three of their runs in the bottom of the
fifth inning with back-to-back RBI
producing at bats. Jackson put UAM on
the board with an RBI-sacrifice fly
Meagan Wilson’s pinch runner Taura Rush.
Wilson singled to center field earlier
in the inning.
Junior Becca Tipton followed with a
two-RBI single to center, scoring
Lindsey Randall and freshman Katie
Bowman. Randall reached on fielder’s
choice followed by Bowman’s infield
single.
In the win over Quincy, Perry (3-0)
threw seven innings, allowed five hits,
struck out one and only gave up two
walks.
The Blossoms jumped out to a quick 2-0
lead with a pair of runs in the bottom
of the first inning. Bowman scored the
first run off a wild pitch from Quincy
starter Korby Paul. Tipton followed the
wild pitch with an RBI-single through
the right side of the infield to score
Jackson, who reached a single down the
left field line.
In the bottom of the fifth, UAM scored
its final run from an RBI-sac fly from
Jackson, scoring junior Kayla Temple,
who led off the inning with a walk.
UAM continues play in the classic
tomorrow (Sunday) with a 10 a.m. contest
against Drury, followed by a 12 p.m.
finale against Southern Indiana.
