DECATUR,
Ala. –
The University of Arkansas at Monticello
softball team picked up a 2-1 win over
No. 17 West Florida followed by a 10-0
loss to Valdosta State on the first day
of the 2009 Gulf South Conference
Crossover Tournament.
In the win over West Florida, the
Blossoms plated a run in each of the
sixth and seventh innings to secure a
come-from-behind win.
West Florida’s (30-8, 5-4 GSC) Ashley
Ingram scored the game’s first run with
a solo homerun to left field in the
bottom of the first inning. Both
pitchers kept the game scoreless from
that point until freshman Randa Perry’s
RBI groundout in the top of the sixth
tied the game at 1-all.
Freshman Katie Bowman, who scored on
Perry’s grounder in the sixth, gave the
Blossoms their final 2-1 lead with an
RBI single to left field in the seventh,
scoring senior Lindsey Randall, who
singled to center one batter earlier.
Freshman Kayla Jackson (16-2) picked up
the win with her 15th complete game of
the season, allowing one run off nine
hits and striking out 10 in her seven
innings of work. Jackson wasn’t as
fortunate in the second game of the day,
picking up the loss after allowing eight
runs off six hits in one and two thirds
innings of work.
Valdosta State’s (31-5, 7-1 GSC) Holly
Satterfield (10-2) proved to be too much
to handle. Satterfield threw a complete
game no-hitter and only allowed two
runners to reach base.
The Blossoms (25-4, 4-2 GSC) continue
play in the GSC Crossover with one game
Saturday against West Georgia at 6 p.m.
at Wilson-Morgan Park in Decatur.
