Blossoms Swept by Ouachita Baptist at Home
April 3, 2008

MONTICELLO, Ark. — The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team was swept by the Lady Tigers of Ouachita Baptist on Thursday afternoon with scores of 3-2 and 2-1, moving UAM and OBU into a tie for fourth place in the Gulf South Conference West Division.

In the second game, senior starting pitcher Kate Brady (Longview, Texas) held a perfect game going into the top of the seventh inning with a 1-0 lead.

However, OBU’s Haley Chambers had other plans. After Brady gave up a lead off double to Randi Wilson, Chambers smashed a two-run home run over the right field fence to give the Lady Tigers a 2-1 lead.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, junior Heather Greer (Hollandale, Miss.) hit a double to right center field to keep the Blossoms alive, but junior Becca Sustaire (Hallsville, Texas) hit a sharp ground ball to Chambers at short stop, who made the play in time to seal a two-game sweep.

With the loss, Brady moves to 6-7 overall this season after pitching the full seven innings, only allowing two runs off two hits, and only walking one off the 24 batters she faced.

In the opening game, the Blossoms out-hit the Lady Tigers 10-4, but a three-run OBU fifth inning, helped by two UAM errors, was enough for an OBU win.

UAM struck first in the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when senior Gemma Gibson (Dodd City, Texas) smashed an RBI-double down the left field line that scored junior Amy Mardis (Burnet, Texas), who hit an infield single earlier in the inning.

UAM scored its final run in the bottom of the seventh inning, when senior Jenny Dunn (Adelaide, Australia) hit a solo-home run to left field, marking her third blast of the season.

Dunn, Mardis, and Brady were all 2 for 4 from the dish to lead UAM offensively.

Sustaire moves to 6-10 overall this season after pitching the full seven innings, allowing three runs (one earned) off four hits and walking none of the 30 batters she faced.

With the two losses, the Blossoms move to 12-20 overall and 5-5 in the GSC, while the Lady Tigers improve to 18-21 overall and 7-7 in the GSC.

Up next for UAM is a GSC double header at Henderson State on Saturday, Apr. 5 starting at 1 p.m. Henderson State is currently leading the division.
