MONTICELLO,
Ark. — Senior pitcher Kate Brady threw
seven scoreless innings, guiding the University of Arkansas
at Monticello softball team to a 1-0 victory in the first
game of a Gulf South Conference double header with Southern
Arkansas. SAU won the second game 2-0.
In the win, the Blossoms scored their lone run in the bottom
of the first inning, when senior Jenny Dunn
(Adelaide, Australia) hit a sacrifice fly to right field
that scored junior Lindsay Randall (Keithville, La.),
who singled earlier in the inning.
Dunn singled in the fourth inning to record her only hit of
the game as she finished 1 for 2 from the dish with one RBI.
Dunn also recorded her third stolen base of the season in
the game.
Randall led the team with a 2 for 3 game with one run
scored. However, Randall ended her seven-game hitting streak
after an 0 for 4 performance in the second game.
Brady (Longview, Texas) recorded her 10th win of the
season after throwing seven scoreless innings, while only
allowing five hits. Brady only walked one of the 26 batters
she faced and now sits at 10-10 on the season.
In the second game, the Blossoms had problems getting base
runners across the plate. The team left 11 runners stranded,
which is their second highest game total of the season.
Senior Meredith Heckel (Hot Springs, Ark.) led the
team, going 2 for 3 with two singles. Her first hit came in
the bottom of the first inning, when she legged out an
infield hit to the short stop. Then in the bottom of the
fourth, she ripped a single to center field.
Junior starting pitcher Becca Sustaire (Longview,
Texas) dropped her season record to 9-15 after receiving no
run support. Sustaire threw the entire seven innings, while
allowing only six hits and walking one of the 29 batters she
faced.
The Blossoms, now 19-28 overall and 12-13 in the GSC need
one win over its next four games to clinch a spot in the
2008 GSC Championship Tournament.
