MONTICELLO,
Ark. — Junior Heather Greer picked a good
time to hit her first home run of the season with a walk-off
grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the
Blossoms a 4-0 win in the first game of a Gulf South
Conference double header with Henderson State. HSU won the
second game 6-0.
Greer (Hollandale, Miss.) was 1 for 4, while junior
teammate Lindsay Randall (Keithville, La.) went 2 for
4 in the first game, bringing her season batting average up
to .348.
Senior Kate Brady (Longview, Texas) recorded the win,
after throwing a nine inning complete game, only walking one
and striking out five of the 34 batters she faced. Brady is
now 11-10 this season.
In the second game, HSU pitcher Patti Collins held a
no-hitter with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but
Brady legged out a double that just stayed fair down the
left field line to remove the zero from the hit column. That
was UAM’s only hit, as senior Lauren Brooks (West
Monroe, La.) followed with a groundout to end the game.
Junior Becca Sustaire (Hallsville, Texas) dropped to
9-16 on the season after throwing six full innings, giving
up all six runs off nine hits.
The UAM softball team presented a special farewell for its
six seniors who played their last home games at UAM. Kate
Brady, Lauren Brooks, K.K. Calloway, Jenny Dunn, Gemma
Gibson and Meredith Heckel were the seniors that
were honored with a framed picture that highlighted their
careers.
Prior to the double header, the Blossoms had already
clinched a spot in the 2008 GSC Championship Tournament to
be played May 2-4. UAM will enter the tournament as the No.
4 seed from the GSC West Division and is likely to play
Alabama-Huntsville in the opening round.
Before tournament play begins, the Blossoms, now 20-29
overall and 13-14 in the GSC, have one more regular season
double header to play. This Saturday, Apr. 26, the team
travels to Magnolia to face Southern Arkansas for two games
starting at 1 p.m.
