MONTICELLO – Senior Meredith Heckel has
been named the Gulf South Conference West Division Softball
Player of the Week, according to the weekly release from the
league office sent Tuesday.
Heckel (Hot Springs, Ark.) went 3 for 7 from the
plate with three RBI in two wins over Christian Brothers on
Friday, March 21 at Blossom Field.
“Meredith is very deserving of this award,” said head
softball coach and UAM director of athletics Alvy Early.
“(Heckel) has been a great leader this season, and it’s
players like her that will keep us in contention for a
conference title.”
The following is a portion of the GSC Weekly release:
Heckel made the most of her opportunities, picking up
three hits in a series sweep over West Division rival
Christian Brothers. No hits were bigger than in game one,
when the senior connected for a two-run walk-off homerun in
the bottom of the seventh inning. That shot was her ninth on
the year, and pushed UAM to a 3-1 record in league action.
The Blossoms and Lady Bucs met again yesterday (March 24)
resulting in a double header split with CBU winning game one
1-0 and UAM winning game two 5-3. The Blossoms (10-16, 4-2
GSC) play again on Thursday, when the team hosts
Missouri-St. Louis for a non-conference double header
starting at 1 p.m. at Blossom Field.
