March 2, 2008

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team swept its final two games of the 2008 Super 8 Softball Classic with a 5-3 win over Missouri University of Science and Technology, followed by a come-from-behind 5-3 win over North Alabama.

Senior Jenny Dunn (Adelaide, Australia) picked a good time to record her first homerun of the season with a three-run smash in the bottom of the fifth inning that eventually led to the 6-3 win over North Alabama. Dunn went 2-for-3 in the game after going 0-for-4 in the win over Missouri S&T.

The Blossoms reached the scoreboard first in the game with one run in the bottom of the first inning, a solo-homerun from sophomore Becca Tipton (Dermott, Ark.), her third blast of the season.

Senior Kate Brady (Longview, Texas) recorded a complete game win after allowing only three runs off three hits. Brady moves to 3-4 on the season.

In the first game of the day, UAM took an early lead over Missouri S&T, with three runs in the bottom of the first inning. The scoring started with an RBI-groundout by Tipton, scoring senior Meredith Heckel (Hot Springs, Ark.), who led off the inning with a single down the left field line.

Junior Lindsey Randall (Keithville, La.) followed with an RBI-single up the middle that scored senior Gemma Gibson (Dodd City, Texas), who singled to left two batters earlier. The first inning scoring ended with an RBI-single from senior Lauren Brooks (West Monroe, La.) that scored Randall.

Randall was responsible for one other run in the following inning with a single through the left side that scored Gibson, who reached with a bunt-hit.

Junior Becca Sustaire (Hallsville, Texas) recorded a complete game win only allowing three runs off nine hits and walking none of the 30 batters she faced.

The Blossoms improve its overall record to 6-14. The next action for UAM is scheduled for Tuesday, Mar. 4, when the team opens Gulf South Conference play at home against Ouachita Baptist. The place and time of the game is subject to change due to the forecast and both school’s basketball teams playing in the GSC Championship Tournament.
