Blossoms Shut-Out Twice By Florida
Southern
February 9, 2008
SAINT LEO, Fla. –
The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team dropped two
games to nationally ranked No. 4 Florida Southern Friday with final
scores of 3-0 in the first game and 8-0 in the nightcap.
GAME ONE (L 0-1)
Florida Southern’s Brittany Minton (1-0) only allowed one
Blossom hit in her complete game win. Minton struck out six
Blossoms, while only allowing one base on balls.
UAM’s Becca Sustaire (Hallsville, Texas) recorded her second
loss of the season in as many games appeared. Sustaire (0-2) pitched
six full innings, allowing three runs, all earned, while giving up
seven hits, gave up one base on balls, and struck out five Florida
Southern batters.
The only Blossom to record a hit in the contest was sophomore
Kayla Temple (West Monroe, La.). Temple went 1-for-2 at the
plate.
GAME TWO (L 0-8)
The nightcap of the double-header wasn’t as close as the
first game. Florida Southern had more offensive production while
still shutting out the Blossoms.
Florida Southern held a 5-0 advantage going into the bottom of the
sixth inning, where they scored three more runs to end the
ball-game, due to the NCAA’s eight-run rule, that ends any game in
which either team is ahead by eight or more runs at the end of the
fifth inning.
Four Blossoms went 1-for-3 at the plate, but the team was out-hit
9-4. Junior Lindsey Randall (Keithville, La.), senior
Jenny Dunn (Adelaide, Australia), sophomore Becca Tipton
(Dermott, Ark.), and Sustaire were the four Blossoms to record a
hit.
Sophomore Allison North (Marion, La.) got the start in the
nightcap and recorded the loss only a day after allowing only one
run in a losing effort to Tampa. North (0-2) pitched four full
innings, allowing three runs, all earned, off five hits and struck
out one Florida Southern batter.
Florida Southern’s Heidi Schumacher (1-0) got the win after pitching
5.1 innings, giving up only four hits, while striking out two UAM
batters.
ON DECK
With the two losses, the Blossoms drop to 0-4 overall and
look to get their first win today (Feb. 9), as the team takes on
Saint Leo in a double-header starting at noon.
