Blossoms Suffer Two Losses On Day Two of Super 8 Classic
March 1, 2008

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello softball team is still winless at home after suffering two losses on day two of the Super 8 Softball Classic.

The first loss came at the hands of No. 14 Alabama-Huntsville, who used a six-run fifth inning, including a grand-slam homerun from the bat of Beth Lawson, pushing the Lady Chargers up enough to enforce the NCAA’s eight-run rule.

UAM scored its runs in the bottom of the third inning, when senior Meredith Heckel (Hot Springs, Ark.) blasted a two-RBI homerun over the left field fence that scored sophomore Kayla Temple (West Monroe, La.), who walked earlier in the inning.

Senior Kate Brady (Longview, Texas) recorded her fourth loss of the season after pitching all five innings, allowing 13 runs off 15 hits.

In the second game of the day, North Alabama used a two-RBI single in the top of the seventh inning from Sarah Whitlow to take the lead over the Blossoms for the first time in the game.

In the bottom half of the seventh, senior Lauren Brooks (West Monroe, La.) led off with a single to right field, followed by a single to left field from junior Amy Mardis (Burnet, Texas). Heckel then reached on a fielder’s choice that retired Mardis’ pinch runner Heather Greer at second base. The Blossoms then flied out twice to end the game with the go-ahead runner on base.

Junior Becca Sustaire (Hallsville, Texas) recorded her seventh loss of the season after pitching the full seven innings three runs off nine hits.

The Blossoms dropped to 4-14 with the two losses and look to record their first home win tomorrow (Mar. 2) in the final day of the Super 8 Classic. The team will have two chances, playing Missouri S&T at 10 a.m., followed by another match up with North Alabama at 12 p.m.
