RAYMOND WRIGHT NAMED GSC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
December 10, 2008
Contact: Brian Ramsey, UAM Sports Information

MONTICELLO  – Senior forward Raymond Wright has been named the Gulf South Conference West Division Player of the Week after aiding the Weevils to a pair of key victories in this past weekend’s tournament at Montevallo.

Wright (New York, N.Y.) earns first award of the season and the third of his career, after the senior averaged 18 points and 8.5 rebounds over the past week in wins over Montevallo (67-53) and West Florida (65-61).

“Raymond is very deserving of this award,” said head coach Mike Newell. “He had two very good games this past weekend, especially in the West Florida game when he scored 15 points in the second half… He and I have discussed the areas he needs to improve, and he understands it… When he gets where he needs to be, he will be very hard to stop, both offensively and defensively.”

In the win over Montevallo, Wright notched his first double-double of the season (13th career) with 19 points and 11 rebounds along with a 9-of-12 effort from the field. A day later, Wright netted a game-high 17 points along with six boards in just 26 minutes in the win over West Florida.

Overall this season, Wright is leading the Weevils in scoring (19.4), rebounding (6.1) and field goal percentage (66.2 percent). He has also hit 70.2 percent of his foul shots (33-of-47), ranking third on team, factoring a minimum of 15 attempts.

Wright and the rest of the nationally ranked No. 13 Weevils play Lemoyne-Owen College this Saturday, December 13 in Memphis, Tenn. Tip-off is set for 3:30 p.m.
