MONTICELLO –
Senior Raymond Wright recorded his
fifth double-double of the season with
28 points and 12 rebounds in a 58-49 win
over Ouachita Baptist in Gulf South
Conference action.
Wright (New York, N.Y.) nailed
11-of-23 field goal attempts and picked
up five points from foul shots and three
points from his lone three-pointer. It
was his second best point total of the
season and also marked the sixth time he
has reached at least 20 points in a game
this season.
The Weevils (13-3, 2-1 GSC) picked up
the victory even being out-shot by the
Tigers (10-6, 0-3 GSC) by almost 10
percent by a final margin of 43 percent
for OBU and 36 percent for UAM.
OBU started strong, even holding as much
as a four-point lead more than halfway
through the opening period. Over the
following five minutes, the two squads
exchanged three lead changes before the
Weevils pulled away late, taking a
seven-point lead of 26-19 into the
locker room at halftime. The Weevils
used an 8-0 run in the last four
minutes, capped off by a jumper in the
paint from Wright with 2:37 left.
Neither team scored for the remainder of
the half.
In the second half, the Weevils were
able to stretch their lead to as much as
nine points with a jump-shot by senior
guard Deron Brown (Paris, Ky.) to
put UAM on top 39-30 with 14:25 to go.
Later in the half, UAM was held
scoreless for almost seven minutes,
allowing Ouachita to tie the game for
the fifth time at 49-all with a
jump-shot from OBU’s Quintin Smith with
3:52 remaining.
However, UAM was able to gain its final
advantage with back-to-back slam dunks,
first by junior Derek Easter (El
Dorado, Ark.) with 33 seconds left,
followed by Wright’s slam just 10
seconds later to finalize the scoring.
The next highest scorer for the Weevils
was senior Don Riley (Pine Bluff,
Ark.) with nine points. Senior Duke
Sturdivant (York, Ala.) chipped in
with eight points, while Easter finished
with six.
OBU was led by Roger Eiland with 13
points, followed by Daniel Maddox with
10.
The Weevils remain in Monticello for
their next contest. The team hosts
Henderson State this upcoming Thursday,
January 22 for a 7:30 p.m. contest at
Steelman Fieldhouse.
