MONTICELLO
–
Sophomore quarterback
Scott Buisson has
been named the 2008 Gulf
South Conference
Offensive Player of the
Year, while six other
teammates have been
placed on the All-GSC
Second Team.
Buisson
(Metairie, La.) will
most likely need more
storage space for all of
his accolades, as the
sophomore is already one
of the most decorated
football players in UAM
history.
Following the 2007
season, he was voted the
league’s freshman of the
year after breaking the
UAM season record for
total offense by a
freshman, as well as set
the school’s single-game
record for total
offensive yards. Also
that season, he was
named the GSC Offensive
Player of the Week twice
and also earned one
national player of the
week honor.
This season, he has done
even better. He re-set
his own school record
for total offensive
yards in a game with a
640-yard game against
Henderson State that
broke the GSC
single-game record as
well. He has been named
the GSC Player of the
Week twice, as well as
the national player of
the week once.
Buisson is only the
second player in UAM
history to be awarded
player of the year
honors, following Cory
Allred’s back-to- back
honors in 2003-04. The
2008 accolade marks the
sixth quarterback in a
row to be named the
GSC’s best offensive
player.
Buisson finished the
season ranking first in
the GSC in rushing yards
per game (119.5) and
second in total yards
per game (365.4), while
being responsible for 37
of 50 total touchdowns
throughout the 11-game
schedule.
The Harlon Hill regional
finalist made NCAA
history with his
performance in the win
over Henderson State by
being the first player
ever to pass for at
least 400 yards and rush
for at least 200 in a
single-game.
Six of Buisson’s
teammates were also
honored by being voted
onto the All-GSC Second
Team.
Offensively, senior
linemen Joe Wilson
and John Meadows,
senior receiver
Clarence Denmark and
sophomore running back
Johnny Polite all
earned spots on the
squad.
Defensively, senior
linebacker Larry
White and junior
free safety Augustus
Ashley both earned
their first ever
accolades.
Re-Capping the remainder
of the awards given,
Southern Arkansas
fullback Mark Johnson
and Valdosta State
quarterback Corey Hart
earned GSC Offensive
Co-Freshman of the Year
honors, while Delta
State’s Dominic Spinks
earned the GSC Defensive
Freshman of the Year
award.
Delta State’s Lardester
Green-Hicks earned
defensive player of the
year honors, while his
head coach, Ron Roberts,
was voted the league’s
coach of the year,
defending his title from
North Alabama led the
way with All-GSC
selections, landing nine
on the first team and
seven on the second
team. UAM and Henderson
State finished second
with seven overall
selections each.
