UAM BASEBALL LOSES A PAIR OF GAMES TO WEST ALABAMA

MONTICELLO – The University of Arkansas at Monticello baseball team lost both ends of double-header to West Alabama on Saturday in non-conference play by final scores of 4-3 and 8-1.

 

In the first game, the Weevils jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, highlighted by an RBI-groundout by junior Drew Harper and an RBI-single by junior Ariel Mercedes. Junior Blaine Ivey was Harper’s RBI and junior Brian Johnson was Mercedes’ RBI.

 

After UWA used a three-run third inning and a one-run fifth inning to take the 4-2 lead, UAM scored its final run in the bottom of the fifth inning with an RBI-double by Ivey to score junior Matt Whiting, who singled to lead off the inning.

 

Junior Brandon Miller (0-4) was saddled with the loss after pitching four and one third innings, allowing 10 hits and all four UWA runs. West Alabama’s Mike Schmitt (4-1) recorded the win after a complete-game seven innings, allowing three runs off seven hits.

 

In the second game, UAM’s lone run came in the bottom of the fourth inning, when Harper smashed an RBI-double to score junior Rod Williams, who reached on a fielder’s choice earlier in the inning.

 

UWA scored three runs in the second and fourth innings and one run in the fifth and sixth innings, highlighted by a two-run homerun by UWA right fielder Kevin Deese in the top of the fourth inning to put the Tigers up 5-0.

 

Sophomore James Stancek (0-2) was saddled with the loss after pitching the first six innings, allowing eight runs (five earned) off seven hits. UWA’s Matt Hill (3-2) recorded the win with a complete-game seven innings, allowing only run off four hits.

 

UAM drops to 5-14-1 overall this season, while UWA improves to 11-7 overall.

 

The two squads are scheduled to conclude its series tomorrow (Sunday, March 8) with a double-header starting at 12 p.m. at Weevils Field.
