FLORENCE, Ala. –
The University of Arkansas
at Monticello baseball team
suffered a pair of losses on
the road in non-conference
play to North Alabama by
final scores of 11-3 and
7-2.
With the losses, UAM drops
to 6-19-1 overall this
season before entering Gulf
South Conference play this
weekend at Arkansas Tech.
UNA improves to 21-8
overall.
In the first game, UAM was
given an uphill battle from
the start after the Lions
scored eight runs over the
first three innings to take
an 8-1 lead into the fourth
inning.
UAM’s first run came in the
top of the third inning with
an RBI-single by freshman
Wayne Hawkins that scored
junior Matt Gardner, who led
off the inning with a walk.
Freshman Tyler Williams was
responsible for the next run
with his second homerun of
the season in the sixth
inning. Later in the frame,
the Weevils scored their
final run of the contest
with an RBI-single by
Gardner, scoring junior Drew
Harper, who reached on error
earlier in the inning.
Sophomore James Stancek
(0-3) was saddled with the
loss after pitching the
first one and two thirds
innings, allowing six runs
off seven hits. UNA’s Ryan
Miller (5-0) earned the win
after throwing the first two
innings, allowing no hits
and no runs.
In the second game, the
Weevils scored their only
two runs in the top of the
second inning, started with
an RBI-double by sophomore
Michael Diffie to score
Harper, who reached on a
single just one batter
earlier. Two batters later,
junior Richard Atwood
knocked in Diffie with an
RBI-single.
UNA scored the majority of
its runs in the bottom of
the third inning with four
runs, highlighted by a
two-RBI double from Kevin
Jones.
Junior Casey Cathcart (0-1)
was saddled with the loss
after allowing the go-ahead
runs in the third inning.
Cathcart pitched one full
inning, allowing four runs
off three hits. UNA’s Chase
Boughner (4-2) recorded the
win after pitching the
third, fourth and fifth
innings, only allowing one
hit and no runs.
The Weevils enter GSC play
this weekend with a
three-game road series at
Arkansas Tech. The first
game of the series is
scheduled for Saturday,
