MONTICELLO –
The University of
Arkansas at Monticello baseball team
recorded a split with Montevallo in
Sunday’s double-header, winning the
first game 4-3 and losing the second
game 7-5.
UAM moves to 2-6-1 overall this
season, while Montevallo returns
home with a 7-4-1 overall record.
In the first game, UAM used a
three-run sixth inning, started by a
solo homerun by freshman Tyler
Williams. Later in the inning,
junior Drew Harper scored when
junior teammate Tyler Henry reached
on a throwing error. Junior Matt
Gardner followed with a pinch-hit
RBI single to left field that scored
Henry.
Freshman Craig Pellegrin (1-0)
recorded the win after holding the
Falcons to no runs in the top of the
seventh inning. Pellegrin pitched
four no-hit innings to close out the
game and only allowed one run, which
was unearned.
In the second game, Harper started
the scoring with a two-run homerun
in the bottom of the second inning,
scoring Williams, who led off the
inning with a single to center
field.
Junior Brian Johnson recorded his
second homerun of the season in the
next inning, smashing a solo-shot to
right field to give the Weevils a
3-1 lead.
Montevallo answered with five
unanswered runs over the next two
innings, creating a come-from-behind
opportunity for the Weevils. The
Weevils responded with the final two
runs of the game with a two-RBI
single in the sixth inning from
Gardner, scoring junior Ariel
Mercedes and Henry.
UAM held Montevallo scoreless in the
top of the seventh, but Montevallo’s
Taylor Edwards recorded three
consecutive outs in the bottom half
to record his first save of the
season.
Junior Lawrence McCloud (0-1) was
saddled with the loss after allowing
the three go-ahead runs in his one
inning of work.
