MONTICELLO –
The
University of Arkansas at Monticello
baseball team moved to 1-5-1 this
season with a 4-2 loss to Montevallo
on Saturday in non-conference play.
The second game of the double-header
ended in a 4-4 tie after the game
was called due to darkness.
In the first game, both teams plated
a run in the second inning.
Montevallo’s Nelson Garcia scored on
an error by the UAM third baseman.
UAM’s junior designated hitter
Blaine Ivey answered in the bottom
half of the inning with a lead-off
solo homerun.
Montevallo’s Cory Luckie answered

Diffie, who reached on error earlier

The Falcons (6-3) finalized the
game’s scoring with a pair of
un-earned runs in the top of the
fifth inning. Montevallo’s Chris
Sosebee drove in Garcia with a
sacrifice fly-out to center field,
which should have been the third
out, followed by a UAM wild pitch,
plating Luckie.
Junior Tyler Henry (0-1) was saddled
with the loss after pitching 4.1
innings, allowing four runs off
three hits. He left the game after
allowing the go-ahead run to reach
base in the fifth inning.
Montevallo’s Mat Turner (1-0)
recorded the win after pitching the
final 3.2 innings, allowing no runs
and only one hit, while striking out
six UAM batters.
In the second game, UAM jumped back
on top of the Falcons thanks to a
three-run fourth inning. The first
run came from an RBI-single from
junior Matt Whiting, scoring junior
Richard Atwood, who singled to
center earlier in the inning. Junior
Matthew Lewis followed with an
RBI-groundout, scoring Henry, who
singled to right field earlier. Two
batters later, Williams hit an
RBI-single to score Whiting.
Montevallo answered with a two-run
sixth inning to re-take the lead
4-3. UAM answered to finalize the
scoring 4-all in the bottom of the
seventh with an RBI-single from
junior pinch-hitter Matt Gardner,
scoring Henry, who reached on a walk
earlier in the inning.
