MONTICELLO –
Central Oklahoma came from behind to
record a 5-4 win over the University
of Arkansas at Monticello baseball
team on Sunday, resulting in a
series victory for UCO after taking
the first game 9-6 on Saturday.
The Weevils (1-4) took a 3-0 lead
over the Bronchos (2-1), starting
with one run in the bottom of the
first inning, with an RBI-double by
junior Brian Johnson (Roanoke, Va.)
that scored freshman leadoff batter
Wayne Hawkins (Memphis, Tenn.).
Hawkins led off the inning with a
walk and moved to second on a
sacrifice bunt by junior Matt
Whiting (Monticello, Ark.).
In the bottom of the fourth inning,
Johnson scored UAM’s second run
thanks to a throwing error by UCO
pitcher Kale Murphree. Junior Tyler
Henry (Pass Christian, Miss.)
followed with an RBI-double, scoring
junior Ariel Mercedes (Oreido,
Fla.), who singled to left earlier
in the inning.
After plating one run in the sixth
inning, the Bronchos took the lead
in the top of the eighth inning with
three runs, thanks in part to an
two-RBI double from Nate Mitani.
Luke Yost was responsible for the
other run with an RBI-sacrifice fly
just before Mitani’s go-ahead
double.
UCO’s Brent Hodge scored the final
Broncho run in the top of the ninth
inning after drawing a walk,
stealing second base, advancing to
third on a wild pitch and finally
reaching the plate on a balk by
junior Brandon Miller (El Dorado,
Ark.).
UAM responded with its fourth and
final run in the bottom half of the
final inning with an RBI-single by
freshman pinch-hitter Jeremy Gill
(El Dorado, Ark.), plating Johnson,
who led off the inning with a double
down the right field line.
After junior Matthew Lewis (Amory,
Miss.) was struck by a pitch to load
the bases, Henry grounded into a
4-6-3 double play to end the game.
Miller (0-2) was saddled with the
loss after allowing the final two
UCO runs. Miller threw two full
innings, allowing only one hit and
walked two of the 10 batters he
faced.
Johnson finished the game 2-for-4 at
the plate with two runs scored and
one RBI. Mercedes was the only other
Weevil to record more than one hit
after finishing the game 2-for-3
with one run scored.
The Weevils travel to Jackson, Miss.
this Tuesday, February 10 for a
