MONTICELLO –
The
University of Arkansas at Monticello
baseball team suffered 8-1 and 11-3
losses to Rockhurst Saturday
afternoon in non-conference action.
In the first game, the Weevils
(5-9-1) scored their lone run in the
bottom of the fourth inning with an
RBI-double by junior Drew Harper,
scoring junior Richard Atwood, who
led off the inning with a double to
left field.
Rockhurst (3-3) scored one run in
each of the first, second and fifth
innings, while also posting a
two-run fourth inning and a
three-run seventh inning.
Freshman Craig Pellegrin (2-1)
recorded the loss after allowing
five runs (four earned) off six hits
in his five innings of work.
Rockhurst was paced by the
complete-game win from Jeremy Pope
(2-1). Pope allowed UAM’s run off
only two hits, while recording five
strikeouts.
In the second game, the Weevils
responded to Rockhurst’s run in the
top of the first with two runs in
the bottom half, started by an
RBI-fielder’s choice from Harper to
score junior Rod Williams, who led
off with a single. Two batters
later, junior Tyler Henry also
recorded an RBI-fielder’s choice to
score junior Blaine Ivey, who walked
earlier in the inning.
Rockhurst responded with four runs
in the top of the second inning, all
of which were unearned. UAM scored
its final run of the contest in the
bottom of the second when freshman
Wayne Hawkins grounded into a 4-3
double play, allowing sophomore
Michael Diffie to score from third.
Diffie tripled to center earlier in
the inning.
Rockhurst scored three runs in each
of the sixth and seventh innings to
extend its lead.
Sophomore James Stancek (0-1) was
saddled with the loss after allowing
the first five runs off seven hits
in his 2 and one third innings of
work. Rockhurst’s Frank Allen (1-0)
was given the win, after relieving
starting pitcher Mike Bell in the
bottom of the fourth inning. Allen
struck out the only batter he faced.
The two squads conclude their series
tomorrow (Sunday) with a
double-header starting at 12 p.m. at
Weevils Field.
