SERVANTES NAMED GSC SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
October 5, 2009
Contact: Brian Ramsey, Sports Information Director

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. –
University of Arkansas at Monticello junior free safety Michael Servantes has been named the Gulf South Conference Special Teams Player of the Week for his efforts in UAM’s 34-32 win over Ouachita Baptist.

Servantes (Fresno City, Calif.) blocked two field goals in the win over then ranked No. 14 OBU. His first blocked field goal was recovered by junior teammate Marcus VanBuren, who ran 75-yards for a touchdown, giving UAM a 14-7 lead with 2:41 left in the opening quarter.

His second blocked field goal clinched the win for the Boll Weevils. Leading the Tigers by two with 32 seconds remaining in regulation, Servantes found an open alley and blocked Jason Fowler’s 22-yard potential game-winning field goal to give UAM its first home win and first conference win of the season.

Servantes also had eight tackles and two pass deflections in the win. One of his pass deflections resulted in an interception in the end zone by senior teammate Quenton Arnett.

North Alabama quarterback Harrison Beck and Delta State linebacker Lardester Hicks-Green earned this week’s GSC Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week honors.
