Projects with High Schools of SE Arkansas

The Foreign Language Program of UAM works hand in hand with the high schools of the area –keeping high school foreign language teachers up to date on new strategies, workshops, and activities to benefit their students. The Program strongly supports the development and growth of foreign language programs in the school districts and are pleased to see many students both finding interest and excelling in new languages.

Foreign Language Festival

Every spring UAM is host to the District 5 Foreign Language Festival, in which high school students from across southeast Arkansas can come to participate in various language competitions. UAM students are more than welcome to come and observe or volunteer to help out with judging and other responsibilities.

The morning consists of individual competitions such as poetry recitation, cultural trivia, art boards, and a vocabulary bee as well as our activity rooms with bingo, arts & crafts, dance instruction, and Japanese culture. From first year to upper-level students and native speakers, all high school participants find something in which to enjoy themselves.

In the afternoon, everyone is welcome to enjoy the performances of the high schools in the group activities. Some students show their talents in impressive dancing and singing, while others demonstrate their creativity and acting ability with elaborate skits –all of which is in the style of foreign cultures and languages.
