History

The University of Arkansas at Monticello College of Technology-Crossett, formerly Forest Echoes Technical Institute, opened its doors for classes on September 2, 1975, at 1326 Highway 52 West in North Crossett. The institution was built under the authority of Act 227 of 1973. Temporary offices were utilized from September 1973 until August 1975 when the original facility was completed. The first class graduated in the summer of 1976.

The original structure was destroyed by a tornado on January 19, 1988. Salvageable equipment was quickly relocated to five different temporary locations, and all classes were resumed within four days. With overwhelming community, business, and industry support, the Board (then the Arkansas Board of Vocational Education), approved the rebuilding of the institution. An aggressive rebuilding plan led to occupancy of the reconstructed facility in November 1988.

In the fall of 2002, meetings began in earnest regarding the potential merger of Forest Echoes Technical Institute with an institution of higher education. Effective July 1, 2003, Forest Echoes Technical Institute became a campus of the University of Arkansas at Monticello. This merger has proven to greatly benefit the college's ability to offer expanded services and more comprehensive educational opportunities.

The original Director of the campus was Charles R. Davis who served in that capacity from 1973-1984. The Director position was filled by Jessie Trantham from 1984-1986, and by Jim Statler from 1986-87. In 1987 Linda Rushing was appointed Director and later named President in 1993—a title change due to accreditations. As a result of the merger with UAM in July 2003, Rushing’s title became Vice Chancellor over the campus and she serves under the leadership of UAM Chancellor, Dr. H. Jack Lassiter.
