NREMT Certification examinations are intended to evaluate the competence of EMS practitioners at a variety of levels: First Responder, EMT Basic, EMT Intermediate (’85 and ’99), and Paramedic.

The tests address content areas defined and validated by subject-matter experts, educators, and individuals working in EMS fields. As the tests provide only one source of information regarding examinee competence, they are used in conjunction with other indicators of training and experience in the granting of certification.
