Program Services

Academic Advising/Counseling: Participants are provided one-on-one assistance with academic program requirements, course selections, graduation and availability of information, resources, and tools critical for academic success. Each participant is assisted in developing an individual Academic Success Plan.

Participants are provided: on-going academic advisement, drop/add counseling, assistance with developing class schedules, and scheduling “realistic” course loads. The academic progress of all participants is monitored periodically and each participant receives individualized conferences to ensure they remain focused and stay on track in order to achieve their academic goals established in the individual Academic Success Plan.

Tutoring/Academic Support Programs:  Tutorial Services are provided to participants on an ”as needed” basis in a variety of required general education and developmental classes.  Trained and supervised tutors who have demonstrated academic excellence conduct tutoring.  Gateway SSS staff works closely with academic departments and faculty to ensure the quality of tutorial services.

A variety of learning skills workshops are provided each semester to support academic and personal development.

Financial Aid Counseling: Gateway SSS collaborates with the UAM financial aid office to ensure that participants receive their maximum financial aid package. This may include extra stipends and/or scholarships.

Personal/Career Counseling: An educational specialist is available to help participants understand and cope with the challenges they may encounter in college, ease their transition through college, and attempt to resolve problems related to participants’ academic success.

Gateway SSS staff provides assistance and guidance with decisions regarding majors and career choices.

Peer Mentoring: One-on-one networking with upper-class participants who can provide helpful information and orientation to the campus and community.

Cultural Enrichment: Access to educational, cultural, and social enrichment activities, exhibits, performances, etc. anywhere in the U.S.

Computer Training: Assistance with word processing, e-mail, web search, PowerPoint, Excel, WordPerfect, Publisher and more.

Graduate School Advising: Information and assistance with preparation for graduate school admission, preparation for graduate admission exams, and arranging and providing transportation for campus visits.

Services To Meet Special Needs: Gateway SSS teams with the UAM Office of Special Services to work with participants with special needs.  Each participant is served on an individual basis to assist with equipment and/or services to ensure academic success.
