LIVINGSTON, Ala. --- The University of Arkansas at
Monticello's Boll Weevils (4-5, 3-3 GSC) racked up 529 yards
of total offense as the Weevils picked up its second
consecutive win, topping West Alabama 44-36 in the Gulf
South Conference TV Game of the Week Thursday night in
Livingston.
The Boll Weevils opened scoring in the first quarter as
freshman Scott Buisson (Metairie, La.) capped a four-play,
49-yard drive with a 40-yard touchdown run to give the
Weevils an early 7-0 lead. West Alabama quickly tied the
contest on their next possession, as Terry Allen capped a
four-play, 56-yard drive with a three-yard touchdown run to
tie the game at 7-7.
After a turnover, the Boll Weevils took advantage with a
quick strike on the first play, as Buisson connected with
freshman Jywin Ceasar (Marrero, La.) on a 20-yard touchdown
strike, giving UAM a 14-7 lead. Once again, the Tigers
responded immediately, as Allen scampered for 46 yards to
cap a four-play, 61-yard drive to knot the game at 14-14
with 1:09 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Weevils reclaimed the lead after a Tiger miscue, as
on fourth down the Tigers’ deep snap sailed over punter J.D.
Wu’s head, going through the end zone for a safety that put
the Weevils ahead 16-14. UAM extended its lead to 23-14
with 4:21 remaining in the opening half, as Buisson picked
up his second touchdown run of the game, a four-yard run
that capped a nine-play, 64-yard drive.
The Tigers once again struck back, narrowing the UAM lead
to 23-21 as Cole Mason powered his way through the UAM
defense for a six-yard touchdown run with 2:05 remaining in
the opening half; but the Boll Weevils would get the last
laugh of the opening half, as Buisson connected with junior
Clarence Denmark (Jacksonville, Fla.) on a 12-yard pass with
seven seconds remaining in the half to extend the UAM lead
to 30-21.
West Alabama would not go away quietly, however, as
Tyrone Tomlin took the second play from scrimmage in the
second half for a 49-yard touchdown run that once again
pulled the Tigers to within two (30-28) just under a minute
into the third quarter. However, Buisson would find Ceasar
twice more, with a 13-yard touchdown pass and a 31-yard
touchdown pass to extend the lead to 44-28.
The Tigers cut back into the UAM lead with Tomlin’s
second touchdown run of the day, a five-yard run that cut
the UAM lead to 44-36 after a successful two-point
conversion; but the Boll Weevils’ defense held the Tigers
the remainder of the game, and the Weevils held on for the
victory.
Buisson completed 25 of 32 passes for 308 yards and four
touchdowns, throwing no interceptions on the night while
also running for 126 yards and two touchdowns on 22 carries.
Freshman Johnny Polite (McGehee) carried for 79 yards
on 26 carries. Ceasar was UAM’s leading receiver with 108
receiving yards on seven catches.
Junior Larry White (Atlanta, Ga.) led UAM with eight
tackles, while junior Scooter White (Lakeland, Fla.) added
seven tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss, two
interceptions and one pass breakup.
