With a pair of win in the first two rodeos on the year, it’s no surprise the women’s team dominated the competition at the Troy University Rodeo Oct. 11. “Since we won three in a row, we are shooting to win all 10,” rodeo coach Jolyn Wells said. Megan Fisher won her third straight Goat Tying event with times of 9.3 and 9.7 to edge out teammate Lana Chastain by a tenth of a second. Stephanie Zakrzewski and Katie Bandy put up strong showings in the event with fifth and sixth place finishes respectively. Zakrzewski finished fourth in Breakaway Roping en route to a second place finish in the all-around. Wells said Zakrzewski should not have competed at the rodeo because of back problems, but she decided to go out anyway. The men’s team struggled at Troy, only scoring enough points for a fifth place showing. Wells said most the team's struggles were because of the animals and the team should bounce back at the next rodeo. “A lot of it was out of their control,” Wells said. “Some of people’s horses didn't work very good, and some people didn’t draw very good stock.” The team of Wes and Bart Brunson finished fourth in team roping with round times of 8.5 and 11.0. Wes Brunson picked up a sixth place finish in Steer Wrestling to qualify for the all-around competition where he finished fifth.
For the first time since the
fall semester last year, the men’s team scored points in the Bull Riding
event. Cody Harrington scored a ride of 62 points in the first round,
but was bucked off in the short go. His performance was still good
enough for 50 points for the team. The rodeo team returns to action Nov. 8 at the University of West Alabama rodeo. Have a comment? Please e-mail us. ŠThe Voice 2007 Revised 09/17/2007 09:07:11 PM — http://www.uamont.edu/Organizations/TheVoice/5_7/rodeo.htm |
