Building on the momentum gained over the weekend, the Cotton Blossoms swept the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff 30-22, 30-22 and 30-24 Tuesday night at Steelman Fieldhouse. Junior Taura Rush, 11, senior Kameshia Melton, 10, and sophomore Nicole Ferguson, 11, registered double digit kills while freshman Vikki Crisco picked up a staggering 37 assists. Crisco, 13, Rush, 10, and junior Maegan Martin, 12, registered double digit digs in the winning effort. “We played well over the weekend and carried some of it with us for tonight,” head coach Nicole Smith said. “We have four new additions to the team and their starting to pick up and jell as a team.” After winning the first game handedly, Rush picked up two aces on her first four serves, going up 4-0 to start game two. UAPB battled back to come as close as 18-17 before the Blossoms pulled away on a 12-5 run to close out the game. The Blossoms dug a hole in game three, going down 4-0. The team battled back to tie 17 all when freshman Keri Gilbert picked up a kill from Crisco. The game went back and forth till the 22-22 mark, when the Blossoms made an 8-2 run to close out a sweep.
With the win, the Blossoms
improve its over-all record to 9-14 going into a conference match
against Henderson State Oct. 16 at Arkadelphia.
