ARKADELPHIA - Special teams spelled disaster for the Boll Weevils Saturday, giving up a punt return touchdown and great field position to Henderson State in a 41-7 blowout at Carpenter-Haygood Stadium in Arkadelphia. The loss broke a two game win streak for the Weevils. Greg Godfrey made his presence felt for the Reddies on the very first kick off. He broke loose on a 41-yard return to Henderson’s 49. The Reddies capitalized on the short field, driving in for a score in four plays. A couple series later, the Weevils punted to Godfrey, who took it all the way on an 84-yard touchdown return. “Godfrey is a phenomenal player,” head coach Gwaine Mathews said. “Kicking the ball to him, you’re in trouble.” After the return touchdown, Weevils mounted its only scoring drive on the day. Scott Buisson connected with Tim Harris on an 11-yard touchdown pass to cap off a 62-yard drive. Buisson finished the game 21-34 for 135 yards and two interceptions. Harris finished the day with five catches for 49 yards, but came up limping in the fourth quarter after a vicious hit. Mathews said Harris is possibly out for three weeks with an apparent knee injury and will have tests done later on in the week when the swelling goes down.
For the rest of the afternoon, the Weevils played like its former self before the win streak, giving up three turnovers and a blocked kick with the Reddies capitalizing with touchdowns every time. “Today we went back to our old problems on offense,” Mathews said. “We turned it over, no second half points and we got totally dominated by that football team.” Despite the loss, the Weevils moved the ball efficiently, gaining 253 yards in total offense, but failed to put points on the board. “Yards don’t mean nothing,” Mathews said. “Yards is the most over-rated stat in football. If you can’t cross that line with that ball, that’s the only thing that matters.” John L. Williams led the Weevils on the ground with 72 yards on 16 carries. Jywin Caesar caught seven passes for 38 yards to lead the Weevils in receptions.
