Former Weevils Football Coach Hosts Book Signing at Library

'Red - Beyond Football'

   Legendary high school and college football coach Jimmy “Red” Parker will autograph copies of his biography “Red – Beyond Football: The Legacy of Coach Jimmy ‘Red’ Parker” at a book signing and reception.

   The event will take place Oct. 11 from 3 to 5 p.m. in the main gallery of the Fred J. Taylor Library and Technology Center and will precede the Sports Hall of Fame induction banquet at 6:30 p.m.

   Parker, who was a football and baseball standout at what was then Arkansas A&M from 1949 to 1952, built a football powerhouse at Fordyce High School in the 1950’s. He became head coach at A&M in 1961 and led the Boll Weevils to a pair of Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference championships in 1963 and 1965.

   He became head coach at The Citadel in 1966 and later served as head coach at Clemson, Delta State, Southern Arkansas and Ouachita Baptist. He was also an assistant at Ole Miss and Vanderbilt. He eventually returned to his roots as a high school coach at Rison, and brought his career full circle by returning to Fordyce.

   Parker is a member of the Arkansas Sports Hall of Fame and the UAM Sports Hall of Fame.

   The library has a copy of “Red: Beyond Football” available for circulation. The book is currently located on the New Books display in the library next to the entrance. Those wishing to look at the book before the book signing can view a copy in the Special Collections room located on the second floor of the library.


University to Dedicate Fountain and Weevil Walk for Homecoming

   The University of Arkansas at Monticello will formally dedicate the William E. Morgan Fountain and Weevil Walk as part of the university’s homecoming celebration Friday, Oct. 12 at 4:30 p.m. The event is open to the public.

   The ceremony will take place at the Victory Bell on the west side of Weevil Pond. The fountain and walkway are part of Phase I of the UAM campus Master Plan. The walk includes benches, large pavers stones and bricks with the names of benefactors who have contributed to the project.

   The fountain, which is located in Weevil Pond, was named for the late William E. Morgan, who served as president of Arkansas A&M from 1946 to 1949. The family of the late Morgan presented a gift to the UAM Foundation Fund to pay for the upkeep of the fountain.

Crossett Campus Hosts Bioterrorism Drill

   UAM-College of Technology Crossett nursing students as well as students from Warren participated in a bioterrorism drill at the ACMC Hospital in Crossett.

   Students acted as patients in the mock drill. The sheriff’s department, fire department, emergency medical technician and health unit also participated in the bioterrorism drill.


Professor Publishes Paper in the Journal of Religion and Film

   Quentin Tarantino’s “Kill Bill” is the subject of a paper published by a University of Arkansas at Monticello English professor in a forthcoming issue of The Journal of Religion and Film.

   Allen Redmon, assistant professor of English and philosophy, authored the paper, which examines the relationship between Tarantino’s popular film and the religious discussions in Margaret Miles’ book "Seeing and Believing."

   Redmon joined the UAM faculty in 2006 from East Texas Baptist University. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Howard Payne University and a master’s and doctorate from Purdue University.
