Walgreens opened a new store on corner of Highway 425 and Highway 278 across from Ray’s on Aug. 31. Walgreens opened its door to receive 500 people on opening day. They did not advertise, but announced it on their sign. Walgreens selected the area they built in because of the traffic flow and easy access for customers. The company also likes to have the corner drug store feel. Michael Rhodes, the store manager, said that everyone seemed excited about the opening and with a smaller store, people feel more at home. The store bases its design on the needs of the community and provides a convenient place to pick up basic necessities. It averages 2,200 customers a week and 380 a day. Sherry Toney, customer, said she liked shopping at Walgreens. “I think it’s a nice place to shop, because you can find things here you can find no where else,” Toney said. Walgreens employs 23 people from ages 17 to 70 and works around the schedules of the five college students working there. They look for people who are friendly, who aren’t scared to talk to perfect strangers and who don’t mind working nights, weekends and holidays. Rhodes said Walgreens provides friendlier service compared to Wal-Mart. “As far as Wal-Mart’s concerned, we provide more customer service and try to be visible on the floor,” Rhodes said. Holly Fletcher, a senior from Monticello High
School, has worked at Walgreens, in almost every department, for three
weeks now. She brings to the store the knowledge of medical terminology
and procedures. She said the workers were very nice, showed her around
and answered any question she had. The store closes at 10 p.m. Have a comment? Please e-mail us. ŠThe Voice 2007 Revised 09/17/2007 09:07:11 PM — http://www.uamont.edu/Organizations/TheVoice/5_5/walgreen.htm |
