Dorothy Everts, associate professor in the School of Social and Behavioral Science, has been named president of the Arkansas Sociological and Anthropological Association (ASAA).

The ASAA is a professional organization whose goal is to “promote the highest level of education in sociology and anthropology in the state of Arkansas and to further the knowledge of the discipline.”

Everts joined the UAM faculty in 1999 from Arizona State University. She holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary science education from the State University of New York at Potsdam, a master’s degree in communication from Arizona State and a Ph.D. in sociology from Arizona State.

She is currently working on a sociology textbook which will examine changes in the family structure across four distinct historical periods from 1600 to the present. She hopes to publish the book in 2010.

Nursing Program Shows 94.4 Percent Pass Rate

Nursing graduates of UAM scored above the national and state averages in 2007 on the NCLEX-RN national licensing exam for nurses.

UAM’s 2007 nursing graduates achieved a 94.4 percent pass rate on the exam, nearly four percentage points higher than the Arkansas average of 90.53 percent and well above the national average of 87.61 percent.

“I want to congratulate our nursing faculty and our 2007 graduates for this wonderful achievement,” said R. David Ray, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs. “UAM’s nursing program has always been a point of excellence for this institution and we are proud that our graduates are prepared at the highest level.”

Passage of the NCLEX-RN national licensing exam is required to become a registered nurse.

Pam Gouner, interim chair and assistant professor in the Division of Nursing, credited the UAM faculty and the division’s small classes for the students’ success on the exam.

“These results can be attributed to a dedicated faculty, a rigorous academic program and the personal attention our students receive, both in the classroom and in clinical settings,” Gouner said. “It has proven to be a winning combination, as evidenced by pass rates on the NCLEX that are well above both the state and national averages. These results make our graduates extremely marketable.”

The UAM Division of Nursing is accredited by the National League for Nursing and the Arkansas State Board of Nursing. For information, call 460-1069.
