The Journalism Club announces Betty Matthews, professor of English, as the speaker for the Second Installment of the Last Lecture Series. The lecture will take place in the Memorial Classroom Building Auditorium Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. Tickets will cost $2 with a student identification card and $3 without a UAM ID card. The Last Lecture Series gives alumni, students and members of the community the opportunity to glean from a campus figure life lessons he or she would want to pass down to future UAM generations. Proceeds gained from the lecture will help fund activities for the Journalism Club; such as professional workshops, state-wide competitions and bolstering student publications on the whole. Journalism Club President Todd Kelley said he could not be more excited to have Matthews as a lecturer. “Dr. Matthews pointed me to UAM’s journalism program,” Kelley said. “I would not even attempt to fathom how many other students she has done the same or similar for. I do know that Matthews is a gem of our campus, and we are very happy that we can share her with this area.” Matthews, who originally came to UAM as a student in 1955, returned to the campus to teach in 1967. She lists the Bible as Literature and Literature of the South as her two favorite classes to teach. In 2006, the Athletic Committee and Chancellor Jack Lassiter appointed Matthews as the Faculty Athletic Representative for UAM. As the Faculty Athletic Representative, Matthews serves student athletes as link between them and the administration. A staple on the UAM campus for four decades,
Matthews has often been quoted as saying, “I plan to die in the
classroom, and they’re going to spread my ashes in Weevil Pond.” Have a comment? Please e-mail us. ŠThe Voice 2007 Revised 09/17/2007 08:03:12 PM — http://www.uamont.edu/Organizations/TheVoice/5_4/lecture.htm |
