   Emily Wright (second from left), a senior from Fountain Hill and Sarah Dorton (second from right), a junior from Eudora were selected by the University of Arkansas at Monticello Agriculture Alumni Society to receive the society’s annual $500 scholarships.

   The scholarships are presented to deserving students to honor Robert C. Kirst, professor emeritus of animal science. Pictured with the winners are (left) Phillip Young of Rye and (right) Mark Owen of Star City, members of the UAM Agriculture Alumni Society.

Band Director Selected as Lead for Arkansas Jazz Orchestra

   Gary Meggs (right) director of bands at UAM, was recently selected as lead tenor saxophonist for the Arkansas Jazz Orchestra, Arkansas’ premier jazz performing group. The Arkansas Jazz Orchestra performs at jazz festivals, state events, universities and other venues throughout the South.

   Pictured with Meggs is Earl Hesse (left), Meggs’ long-time saxophone instructor and a member of the Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame. The two recently performed together at the Arkansas Jazz Festival in Hot Springs. Hesse is the lead alto saxophonist for the Arkansas Jazz Orchestra and will be the featured performer at the UAM jazz band concert next spring.
