Three players on the Cotton Blossom volleyball team registered double-digit kills en route to a 3-1 victory over Division I Grambling State Wednesday night at Steelman Fieldhouse.

Taura Rush led the way with 16 kills, with Kameshia Melton and Nicole Ferguson finishing with 14 and 12 respectively

Meagan Martin served up 47 assists and 17 digs, both team highs. MacKenzie Willis also picked up 13 digs

Blossom’s head coach Nicole Smith rotated players to amazing results and emphasized teamwork in the win.

“Our team chemistry is vital to our success,” she said.

The Blossoms started the day off with an impressive win against the bigger Division I school. In all matches that the Blossoms won, the team rallied from behind by large margins.

After falling behind 28-22, the Cotton Blossoms rallied to knot the game at 28-28 before taking a 35-33 victory in the opening game. The Blossoms carried the momentum into game number two to take a dominant 30-17 victory.

The Lady Tigers would not go quietly, as they rallied to capture a 30-28 victory in game three before the Blossoms rallied to take a 31-29 victory in the decisive fourth game.

The Blossoms return to action Sept. 20 in its first conference game against Henderson State. The Gulf South Conference will feature the match up as its match of the week, a first for the Blossoms.

The GSC Web site will have player profiles, coach’s thoughts and much more to bring more exposure to the sport.
