Millions of people are sleep deprived: getting up early, staying up late, fighting insomnia.

It’s estimated that sleep problems are the No. 1 health issue in the United States and afflict nearly half of the adult population. Viewers learn how to overcome sleep issues in “Good Night with the Sleep Doctor Michael Breus, PhD” airing on the Arkansas Educational Television Network Thursday, Dec. 6 at 10:30 p.m.

Thirty-six million Americans have problems getting through the day because they don’t sleep enough the night before. Lack of sleep may also make them sick.

Breus explains how genes, environment, job habits and physiology may be hampering sleep and in turn dramatically affecting waking life. He suggests that getting the proper amount (both quality and quantity) of sleep will rejuvenate the mind and body, improve sex life, increase energy reserves, help people lose weight and keep it off, and possibly take years off their appearance.

He’ll also banish the myths about sleep, gives tips on improving slumber and review the five habits of well-rested people. Breus, a diplomat of the American Board of Sleep Medicine, specializes in sleep disorders and neuropsychological testing. He is board-certified in both clinical psychology and clinical sleep disorders. Breus is the “Sleep Expert” for WebMD, answering questions daily on the sleep disorders message board.

The Arkansas Educational Television Network, http://www.aetn.org, provides lifelong learning opportunities, improves and enhances Arkansans’ lives and celebrates the unique culture of Arkansas through its programming and services. AETN’s analog and digital transmitters and numerous cable system connections give it statewide reach.
