Award Winning - Janette Thompson shoots a free throw against Rhema. Thomas led the record setting Blossoms with 25 points while going 7 for 10 behind the arc in the Rhema game to win GSC West Play of the Week honors.

Arkansas-Monticello freshman forward Janette Thompson (Hot Springs) has been named the Gulf South Conference West Division Player of the Week, according to release sent from the GSC office Wednesday.

Thompson, who started all six games this season for UAM, is the first UAM player this season to be given the award.

The following is a portion of the GSC Player of the Week release:

Arkansas-Monticello forward Janette Thompson (Fr., 5-11, Hot Springs, Ark.) earns the West Division Player of the Week Award. Thompson has wasted no time asserting herself in the GSC, starting all six games as a freshman.

Last week, she sparked UAM to a 4-1 record. The freshman averaged 16.4 points per game, going over the 20 point mark on two occasions. In a record setting win over Rhema, Thompson connected on seven three point shots, as UAM set the GSC record for three-pointers made in a game with 21.

Currently, Thompson is the leading scorer for UAM with 16.3 points per game and has racked up 98 total points this season. Thompson has connected on 20-of-36 three-point attempts (also a team-best), while averaging 26 minutes per game.

Thompson and the Cotton Blossoms hit the road this weekend to Arkadelphia where they will play in the Ouachita Baptist Classic against Montevallo Friday at 4 p.m. and St. Mary's Saturday at 1 p.m.
