Reworking the Six-Degrees of the BCS

Kevin Sims
Sports Editor

At the end of every Division I college football season, the grumbles and gripes of the not-so-well thought of and highly opinionate pour out like candy in a self righteous piņata.

Then the highly "oppressed" sports fan gives their two cents about who they think the most deserving team is, which just so happens to be the same team they own a closet full of merchandize bearing the same name.

The Bowl Champion Series is a flawed system even the Powers-To-Be know of, and profit from. Everyone has an opinion of how to make it better, but I devised the perfect system that works in a similar way as the BCS.

Then again, no one knows, not even the creators, exactly how the BCS works. I might have uncovered its secret unknowingly. Regardless here is my system.

After working out an extensive formula devised by myself that includes strength of schedule, quality wins and an interactive poll where I polled myself, I came to the conclusion the University of Louisiana at Monroe should be the National Champions.

Despite the lowly 6-6 record against lack luster opponents, the team’s “quality” win against “strong”ly over-rated Alabama makes them a virtual lock as the Nation’s best team. Here is why.

ULM beat Alabama 21-14 Nov 17. Alabama inked out a 41-38 win over Arkansas Sept. 15, who in return beat SEC champion LSU 50-48 in triple overtime in the last game of the regular season. In just three-degrees ULM took out a team that was ranked No. 1 twice during the 2008 season.

Want further proof? LSU beat ACC champion Virginia Tech along with Florida, Auburn and Tennessee. The list of teams Virginia Tech, Florida, Auburn and Tennessee beat include: Clemson, Boston College, Virginia, Georgia and Kentucky.

When you add up all their wins and the wins against their wins and so on, mathematically ULM beat every team in the country. It’s infallible reasoning.

Like Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon, which makes him my third cousin on my mother's side and grandfather to my late dog, Saban, ULM should be the National Champions without ever having to play in January.

After finishing the research, I even added in that LSU ruined Arkansas' chances at back to back national championships in 1965, Tim Teebow’s inability to win the Heisman due to being a sophomore and the fact that George W. Bush was a cheerleader at Yale. I still conclude that ULM deserves to be the National Champions.

All this research brought up only one important question, where’s the damn playoffs system already?
