The Voice Gives Thanks

I am thankful for my life – all the experiences that have made me who I am today, both good and bad.  I am thankful for people – all those people in my life that make me think, keep me real and make me happy.  I am thankful for the world – that which is good and that which fights for goodness.

In short, I am thankful for everything and everyone, the good and the bad, the ugly and the beautiful.  Life is what you make it, so how could you be ungrateful for any of the tools you’ve been given to work with?

Brooke Burger
Editor-in-Chief

I am very grateful for the wonderful girlfriend I have.  She has shown me real love.  I am very grateful for my beautiful children, and that I get to see them soon.  I would feel very empty without them in my life, and miss them when I can't see them as much as I would like.  Today I am also thankful that I don’t have a gun, or I might be tempted to forget my thankfulness!

   Happy Thanksgiving.

Todd Kelley
Managing Editor

Driving to my boyfriend's house last weekend, I saw a sign reminding "Thanksgiving is an attitude, not a day."  I often forget the things I am thankful for - too many and varied to list here.

Still, foremost, I am thankful for my family - my son Christopher, my boyfriend Heath and his daughter.  They give me so much.  And I still am amazed someone so special walked into my life - and thinks I am special too!

I am grateful to have friends who have accepted me as I am.  And also grateful for all the things that have pushed me into growth - not allowing me to be complacent.  Even the trials in my life have value if they bring meaning or hope to someone else.  So, I am thankful for the strengths that have carried me through.

I am truly blessed to have started college and succeeded in my 30s.  I am grateful to all who helped me walk this path.  You know who you are...

  Happy Thanksgiving today and always!

Karie Lynn Fay
Commentary Editor

In these times, it seems Thanksgiving sometimes loses its meaning and it is sometimes skipped over with a large jump from Halloween straight to Christmas.

I am thankful for God, my family, my church family, my adopted family, my friends and the fact that I am alive and well.  I am thankful for the people who love me and support me.

Linna Jones
Arts & Entertainment Editor

Mine is a little long, but I needed the space to put everything in.

The beginning of the holiday season and the end of the year makes one understand what it means to be truly thankful,  This year I close a chapter in my life here at UAM and would like to thank a few people for my experiences.

I would like to thank Dr. Sitton for pushing me along towards my goal, no matter how badly I wanted to quit.  You really go above and beyond your duties as a teacher and adviser and, most of all, as a friend.

I would like to thank all of the staff members I've worked with on The Voice, but a few deserve special attention:

Michael Ford for making The Voice what it is and helping people strive for perfection.

Brooke Burger for being our fearless leader this semester, helping me stay somewhat organized, staying on my back when I wanted to slack off and giving me the benefit of the doubt when things beyond my control arose.

Thank you Todd Kelley for always putting a smile on my face with some off-beat comment and enlightening me on alternative views on various subjects like religion and politics.

I would also like to thank all the UAM coaches, athletes and staff members for making my job as Sports Editor easier by always giving me the time to talk with you.  You made me realize sports journalism is my calling, and gave me a broad range of coverage from championships to last place finishes.  Thanks for all the highs and lows this year.

For all those I left off through either forgetfulness or lack of space, I still thank you for making my stay at UAM an enjoyable experience.

Kevin Sims
Sports Editor

I'm very thankful for everything God has blessed my life with, especially this past year. I'm thankful for my wonderful husband, John, who puts up with me.  I don't know how he does it sometimes. I'm also thankful for my Mom.  She's one of my very best friends, and I appreciate everything she does for me.

Last, but not least, I'm thankful for my Tri Sigma sorority sisters.  They're wonderful women, and I don't know where I would be without them.  They've been there for me through thick and thin, and I love them for it.

I am thankful to have custody of a teenage boy, two jobs and a very interesting roommate.  I am thankful for my family.  I love them.

I am thankful to almost be finished with school.

I am thankful our current president only has roughly a year left in office.

I am thankful to live in a country that allows me to be critical of it and express unpopular opinion.

Most of all, I am thankful for my friends and family, especially those that have been instrumental in helping me become the only success story to ever come out of Southeast Arkansas.

I am thankful for everything.  Even though some things are perceived as being bad, they always turn out to be for the good.  The joy that comes from being an optimist is what I'm really thankful for.  Try it!

During this special time we call Thanksgiving, I am thankful for many things.

First, the music that fills my life with joy everyday.  My life would be rather boring without music.

Second, my friends.  I am forever thankful that they have been there for me and will continue to be.  I do not know what I would do without them.

Last, and most importantly, my family.  Arriving three months early put my life in danger several times, and for my life, I am also very thankful.  But it is my family who has stood by me every day of my life.  If I ever need anything, even just a shoulder to lean on, there are many shoulders available.  That is why, at Thanksgiving, one song sums my life up.  Kelly Clarkson's "Thankful," could not be more perfect.

"Don't you know that I'm thankful for the blessings and the lessons that I learned with you by my side?  And I'm so thankful for the love that you keep bringing in my life.  When I didn't think I could go on, you made me feel strong.  I'm so thankful," are the lyrics Kelly wrote about her friends and family.

At this time of year, gratuity and appreciation flows through family members and friends as we reflect on those important to us. When I think of who needs to be thanked in my life, God tops the list as I appreciate every day that I wake up.

The next on my list goes to my parents. They perform the tasks associated with parenting and the tasks that remain unveiled. In my past, tribulation wreaked havoc, and it seemed a solution hid in the dark corners unable to be found. My parents revealed the light and helped me in every way possible. Financially furnishing me the needs and wants to build my life back up to where it once was. Emotionally, they stabilized the effects of troubles, which without them could have destroyed me. Other people also reinforced my belief in love and trust.

One person whom deserves recognition, my sister, caught me many times when I contemplated falling. She lent her ear to my troubles and still does. As we were not close as children, we regain what was lost by being there for each other now. Her taking my daughter to do things, e-mailing back and forth regularly and calling just to check up on me fills my life with happiness, and I owe my parents and my sister many thanks for all they have done for me.

Friends encourage me daily also. I wish to thank all my friends for putting up with my pranks, jokes and attitude.

I'm thankful for many things.  I'm thankful for my close family and good friends who mean a lot to me.  But what I'm most thankful is the ability to be able to walk again.

You see, I had a car accident last May.  I broke my ankle real bad.  My bones in the ankle were broken in pieces.  It was real serious.  I've had two surgeries and been forced to use crutches. But I've been determine to push forward, slowly.  And in time I was able to lose the crutches.

I'm walking on my own now.  Taking it easy.  I hope by this time next year, I'll be thankful to RUN once again.

John Horn
Staff Writer

Well to be honest, I'm thankful for myself.  That's right, myself.  I'm the reason why I'm still in the game of life.

I also thank God for just letting me exist.  Otherwise, I have little or nothing to be thankful for.

When I become wealthy, and I mean no offense (white-man wealthy) then I can be thankful for more things - but for now, I thank myself.

Chad Newton
Staff Writer

This Thanksgiving, I am thankful for my fiancée, Derek McGee, who passed away back in March.  I am grateful for all the things he taught me while he was alive and the love he gave me.  I am thankful for the lessons I have learned, and have yet to learn, with his death.

I am also thankful for his family for taking me in as one of their own and helping me through this time of loss.  I am also grateful for my blood family and friends who have supported me in my time of need.

And finally, to my faith, without which I think I would be lost.

I am truly thankful for all of my wise and supportive friends who surround me because without them I would go crazy.

I'm thankful for being poor but yet rich in all the things that really matter - a wonderful family, great friends, good dogs, a stress-free job, music, a nice home, a stimulating college class like Intro to Journalism, the ability to move, run, play, laugh, dance and relax, in a good community.

I'm thankful for having a beautiful love brought into my life - Sidney.  She has made my life complete and much more rich than ever could be bought by money.  There is much to be thankful for.

I want to give thanks for my family, friends and the fact that I am here to enjoy it all. My family and friends are the most important thing to me.

Amanda West

Once again, the holidays arrive and I've asked the staff to give thanks this Thanksgiving season.

I'm thankful for the togetherness of this year's student publications staff, especially those who helped publish three yearbooks since January. I'm thankful for the support of the campus community, and for an administration willing to support the
necessity of journalism on a university campus.

I'm thankful for the opportunity to have family nearby for the holidays, and for the opportunity to catch up with friends, i.e. "the family I choose," during this time.

I'm thankful for our soldiers and hope they return home safe and soon.

And a special thanks to you, the reader, for reading The Voice and picking up all of those yearbooks.

Have a great, safe holiday season.

Voice and Boll Weevil Adviser
