Kelley Managing Editor Sigma Tau Gamma will present a junior nursing major with the Joseph Martin Guenter Scholarship. The scholarship, the first one to be given by a Greek fraternal organization on campus, is given to a minimum one-year member of the Upsilon Chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma. This year’s recipient, Jacob James of Augusta, said the scholarship will help his fiscal situation. “The scholarship helped me afford books,” James said. “We all know college prices are increasing. (Because of this) I would like to thank everyone that had a hand in this scholarship, the alumni and Mr. Guenter.” Approximately 15 years ago Sigma Tau Gamma alumni endowed the scholarship and named it after Guenter. “For service above and beyond the call of duty,” Guenter said. Guenter, the faculty sponsor of Sigma Tau Gamma, said the experiences he had with the organization are his first with Greek organizations. Guenter said that before becoming sponsor of Sigma Tau Gamma he had no previous affiliations with fraternal organizations.
“It took me five years to
understand the complexity,” Guenter said.
