Museum of Discovery Offers Saturday Programs

    The Museum of Discovery will continue its popular Saturday Discoveries program, which allows children to explore science through hands-on activities and experiments.    

   Saturday Discoveries classes will take place the second Saturday of each month, January through May from 1 to 4 p.m. Classes are designed for ages 5-13.

   A different science topic will be covered each month and a list of descriptions and dates are below.  Each class costs $15 per child and space is limited.  Reservations should be made in advance by calling Beth Nelsen at 501-396-7051.

  • Dec. 8:  Science of Snapshots
       Say cheese!  A lot of science takes place from the time a photograph is shot to the time it is printed as a picture.   
     

  • Jan. 12, 2008:  Dinomites
      
    Learn about dinosaurs, how real fossils form and create replicas of fossils. 
     

  • Feb. 9, 2008:  Science of Sweets
     
      Experiment with the art of making candy, and learn the science behind how it forms and why it tastes so good. 
     

  • March 8, 2008:  Brains and Veins
      
    Students learn about their bodies and see a real human brain.   
     

  • April 12, 2008:  Science of Magic
      
    Science of wizardry unfolds as children learn magic tricks in science and science tricks in magic. 
     

  • May 10, 2008:  Science of Makeup
     
      Students learn the chemistry of oils, gels and lotions. Children mix their personalized beauty formulas from cosmetic bases. 
     

 ABOUT THE MUSEUM:

    Founded in 1927, Little Rock’s oldest museum, The Museum of Discovery, remains a fixture of the River Market District in Downtown Little Rock and welcomes visitors into a “world of discovery for all ages.”  Throughout 2007, the Museum proudly celebrates “80 Years of Discovery.”  The yearlong celebration will include special events and exhibits designed to highlight science, history and technology.   The Museum’s mission is to engage, enlighten and educate people of all ages through an interactive experience where science and history come alive. The Museum of Discovery is a Smithsonian Affiliate, and a member of the American Association of Museums, the Association of Science and Technology Centers and the Association of Children’s Museum.

   Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for children 1-12, $7 for seniors over 65 and free for children under one.
