Comet Homes Visible to the Naked Eye

Joe Guenter
Staff Writer

For some weeks now a comet has been visible to us in the night sky.  It is known as Comet Homes, having been discovered by E. Holmes of London, England in the late 1800's.

Since its discovery, it has made 16 orbits around the sun and is, therefore, considered to be an old comet.  For no obvious reason it has brightened considerably, making it easily visible to the naked eye.

To see Comet Holmes wait until an hour after sunset and look toward the northeast, in the direction of the constellation Perseus, just below the “W” shape of Cassiopeia.  It will appear as a fuzz ball. You may have a better chance of seeing the comet’s tail if you use binoculars or a sighting scope.

You can find some good photos and more information here.
