Women's Team Win Streak Ends at West Alabama

Kevin Sims
Sports Editor

The women’s rodeo team's winning streak ended at the West Alabama rodeo, as the women’s team finished fourth after winning the first three rodeos of the year.

Only two women scored points for the team, and Megan Fishers’ streak of three wins in the Goat Tying event ended when she put up no time in the first round. Coach Jolyn Wells said the teams draw played a huge factor in the poor showing.

“It’s kind of like down at Troy when I said the animals played a big factor,” Wells said.

Lana Chastain won the women’s all-around despite borrowing a horse for the rodeo. During practice last week, her horse went lame after running into a fence.

She tied for first in Goat Tying with an average time of 19.3 seconds. In break away roping, Chastain won the long round with a time of 2.9, but a no time in the short go dropped her to fifth place in the standings.

Katie Bandy scored 35 points for the team in goat tying with her seventh place finish.

The men’s team placed third in the standings, although a few of the team members said they performed badly.

“The guys didn’t have a very good rodeo but I got to thinking ‘You know what, no body really had a good rodeo.’” Wes Brunson said. “I was expecting to be closer than we were.”

Brunson finished third in the men’s all-around, scoring 200 points in two events. He finished second in Steer wrestling with an average time of 9.4. Like on the women’s side, draw played a factor in team roping when the team of Bart and Wes Brunson finished fourth.

“The draw definitely came into effect in team roping,” Wes Brunson said. “The steer pulled its leg out. I had him by two feet and he pulled his leg out, and we got a five second penalty. If he didn’t we would of won the long round and we would of won the average.”

For the second straight rodeo, Cody Harrington scored points in the Bull Riding event with a score of 69 in the first round. He bucked off in the short round, but he still managed to get 100 points for the team.

Bud Bogan finished third in Steer Wrestling despite a broken wrist. Wells said he cracked his wrist the last practice before the event and talked the doctor into letting him wear a brace so he could still compete.

Casey Greer also scored points in Steer Wrestling with a ninth place finish. Lane Hewett placed eighth in team roping as a header.

Going into the last rodeo of the semester, the women’s team holds a 635 point lead with Bandy and Fisher leading the Break Away Roping and Goat Tying events respectively. Chastain sits in second in goat tying.

On the men’s side, the team holds down the third spot with Wes and Bart Brunson in second and third place in the all-around respectively.

The rodeo team returns to action Nov. 15 at the Murray State rodeo.
