Phi Alpha Theta, a national college honor society for history students and
scholars, has awarded a chapter to the University of Arkansas at Monticello.
According to Trey Berry, dean of the School of
Social and Behavioral Sciences, membership in Phi Alpha Theta for
undergraduate students requires a grade point average of 3.1 or better in 12
or more credit hours of history, a 3.0 overall GPA and rank in the upper 35
percent of the student’s class.
Phi Alpha Theta was established in 1921 at the University of
Arkansas-Fayetteville and has 839 active chapters and more than 275,000
members. The organization promotes the study of history through the
encouragement of research, good teaching, publication and the exchange of
learning and ideas among historians.
“This is a significant achievement for the School of Arts and Humanities
and the institution as a whole,” Berry said. “Organizations such as Phi
Alpha Theta provide support for students both in and out of the classroom.
We’re excited that our students will have the opportunity to interact with
other history scholars from across the country.”
Berry credited Dr. Kyle Day, assistant professor of history, for
his efforts in securing the chapter for UAM.
“Kyle has done a tremendous job and I’m grateful for his work in getting a
Phi Alpha Theta chapter for UAM,” Berry said.
