Wanted: UAM sports fanatic!

The sports editor produces sports copy and coordinates coverage of the Boll Weevils and Cotton Blossoms.

Duties:
    * Assign and writes sports stories for at least 80 percent of the semester's issues.

    * Edit sports stories.
    * Consult with photo editor to coordinate sports coverage.
    * Recruit sports reporters.
    * Supervise sports staff members.
    * Work with reporters to develop stories and sources.
    * Attend weekly staff and editorial board meetings.
    * Meet on a regular basis with the Sports Information director to obtain official university press releases concerning sports coverage.

    * Procure passes for athletic events as needed.
    * Provides sports copy (year-in-review) for yearbook.
    * Puts section's articles into htm
    * Design and layout sports page.
    * Other duties as assigned by the editor-in-chief, managing editor or adviser.

Now - Oxford American, the Southern magazine of good writing, sent UAM hundreds of magazines. The magazines are free to everyone and are available for pick-up in the Memorial Classroom Building Writing Center. The magazine sent four issues, including Issue 57, 2007; Issue 55, 2006; Issue 52, Winter 2006; Issue 51, Fall 2005; Issue 49, Spring 2005; and Issue 48, Winter 2005.

Now-Nov. 14 - CIS club is collecting canned goods / nonperishable items for Holmes Chapel Presbyterian Church. The drive ends Nov. 14 so the items will be delivered in time for Thanksgiving. Bring your items to BBC Room 101.

Now-Nov. 15 - The Ambassadors will sponsor a non-perishable food drive for the Drew County Veterans of Foreign War Food Pantry. Please bring any donations to the Office of Admissions on the first floor of Harris Hall.

Nov. 15 - Students in Recital will take place in the Harris Recital Hall in Music Building. Student musicians will perform a piece of music with their instrument for students and faculty.

Nov. 15 - The Foreign Language Club will host a Foreign Food Festival in the Gibson University Center Capital Room.

Nov. 15 - Free Great American Smokeout "Survival Kits" will be given out to anyone who pledges to quit tobacco for one day in the U.C. Green room 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Nov. 23 - Deadline to enter the Mr. and Miss Holiday Diamond Pageant. The pageants, sponsored by the UAM Diamond Girls, will begin at 2:30 p.m. Dec. 1 at the Fine Arts Center. Entry Fee is $25. Nov. 27 - The Economics of Environmental Management class will present results of their survey on the feasibility of poultry litter as a substitute for chemical fertilizer in Southeast Arkansas agriculture and additional information gathered on the topic in a university seminar at 12:45 p.m. in the Division of Agriculture Auditorium.

Nov. 27 - An Assembly Meeting will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the Memorial Classroom Building auditorium.

Nov. 27 - The Third Installment of the Last Lecture Series will take place in the MCB auditorium at 7 p.m. Dean of Math and Science Morris Bramlett will speak at the event. The Journalism Club will sponsor the event and will charge $2 with a student ID and $3 without an ID in order to raise money for the club.

Tuesdays

The Student Government Association and the Student Activities Board meet at 12:40-1:30 p.m. every second Tuesday of each month in the U.C. Caucus Room  Any student can participate and attend meetings. The Spatial Information Systems Club meets bi-weekly on Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. in Room 209A of the Chamberlin Forest Resources Complex.

The Alpha Chi student honorary conducts regular business meetings for members only from 12:40 – 1:30 p.m. on the second Tuesdays of each month.

Farewell - The UAM community gathered to wish Charlie Kremers, director of dining services, farewell after three years of service. Kremers will work with ARAMARK at a sister institution.

Creative Society meets Thursdays at 12:40 p.m. outside the Patio Café. Those interested in joining the club should contact Shannon Stivison at ses2407@uamont.edu.

The Psychology Club holds meetings the last Thursday of every month at 12:45 p.m. in MCB 315. Anyone interested may attend. The club also offers tutoring services for psychology courses.

The campus chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People meets at 6 p.m. in Horsfall Hall.

Drew Country Writers meet on the third Thursday each month in the First Presbyterian Church library at 6:30 p.m. Members must produce tangible evidence that they write, though they may not have published at this point.

Missionary Baptist Student Fellowship hosts "Renown" meetings at 9 p.m. at the MBSF Center (near the tennis courts). Come find out about weekly small groups and upcoming events. All students are encouraged to attend.

World Prehistory, a class offered spring 2008, is a unique elective course that bridges the cultural/academic gaps between the physical and biological sciences and the Social & Behavioral Sciences and History.

   Class Description:  ANTH 2203 (0822 01) - WORLD PREHISTORY - Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 9:40-11 a.m.

   An Anthropology & “Cultural Ecology” course that surveys human biological and cultural evolution, from the earliest “hominids” to ourselves (Homo sapiens); from hunter-gatherers to agriculturalists; from simple “band” societies through tribes to more complex “chiefdoms” and the rise of the first states and civilizations. No pre-requisites required.

Planning to graduate in May 2008? The Foliate Oak Literary Magazine seeks creative, disciplined students to be a part of our editorial team. Every month, we post a new issue of our magazine online. Once a year, we create a print issue of our magazine. We are thinking about adding a podcast to our magazine. For more information, contact adviser Diane Payne at payne@uamont.edu.

The Ad Hoc Committee on Academics currently is examining issues of how to increase academic standards at UAM. The committee will present concrete proposals by the end of the semester to the Assembly and eventually the administration. It seeks proposals and recommendations from faculty, staff and students about how to raise academic standards at UAM.

If you need a good book to read, check out the Book Exchange. The service, provided by the Taylor Library and located near the current newspapers, includes a variety of leisure reading materials. Books from the book exchange need not be checked out. Just take a book you would like to read and bring it back when you are finished or bring a replacement if you can. It's as easy as that!

Scholarship Opportunity - The UAMS Medical Center Nurse Recruitment Loan Program awards up to $1,250 per semester for a full-time nursing student. The award is renewable for up to $5,000 total. Eligibility includes:

  • Acceptance into a state approved school of registered nursing on a full-time or part-time basis;

  • Completion of the basic educational requirements for the BSN program;
  • Cumulative GPA of 2.8 or above;
  • Required to work full-time at the UAMS Medical Center, hospital only, as a registered nurse for a period of six months for each semester of assistance or repay the total awarded.

Applications are available in the Office of Admissions on the first floor of Harris Hall. The deadline to apply for the spring term is Dec. 1.

Tailgate Party - Quarterback Scott Buisson had another large turnout at the Tailgating Party. The Buisson family served New Orleans-style shrimp and gumbo.

On-Campus Jobs

Student Worker: The School of Education needs a student worker. The candidate can qualify for federal or institutional work study. They must have some knowledge of computer technology and knowledge in Web page design. The candidate’s main responsibility will be to assist with the CIV lab. Other duties will include: making sure faculty’s printers have replacement cartridges, setting equipment up in classrooms and possibly troubleshooting minor technical difficulties. Any interested persons should bring a resume with a brief description of your qualifications to Willard Hall main lobby or room 115.

Student Worker: The Office of the Registrar needs a student worker eligible for federal college work study and willing to work up to 20 hours per week. They prefer a student with at least a 3.00 cumulative GPA.  The primary job duty is filing and confidentiality is required. Interested students should come by the Registrar’s Office, first floor of Harris Hall. References may be checked.

Assistant Professor of Psychology: The School of Social and Behavioral Sciences is seeking applicants for a position at the rank of assistant professor in psychology.  Appointment will begin in August 2008. 

  • Responsibilities:  In addition to Introduction to Psychology, the successful candidate must be able to teach a wide variety of courses including developmental, child development and adolescence.  Preference will be given to those candidates who strive to be master teachers, who are committed to the mentoring of students and who also have well-developed research agendas.
  • Qualifications: Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology or related areas and teaching experience.  Candidates with earned doctorates will be eligible for a tenure-track position.  ABD candidates who will complete their degrees by August 2008 may also be considered.
  • Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience / Excellent fringe benefits.

University of Arkansas at Monticello will implement a mass emergency communication system for the campus.

   The program offered by Arkansas Crime and Information Center will alert the University community by telephone, e-mail and fax. (The agency is working toward including a text messaging system next year). The agency will provide warnings for various emergencies including a campus shooting, tornado threat, fire, violent crimes and other scenarios.

   In order to perform the distribution of emergency messages, the University needs to collect a personal emergency contact number for each student.  The mass communication will work more effectively if the emergency number belongs to a cell phone that each student carries with him or her.

   Students are urged to go to one of the following offices as soon as possible to submit your emergency notification information:

Monticello – Registrar’s Office – Harris Hall 102
Crossett – Student Services Office
McGehee – Student Services Office
These three offices will be accepting your information for the remainder of this semester.

Wireless access is available in the library for faculty, staff, students and guests. In order to access wireless service you must have the correct software drivers installed on your computer. If you have any difficulties accessing wireless, please make an appointment with an IT Tech. All devices connecting to the campus network must have updated and approved antivirus software installed on the device.

The Arkansas Student Loan Authority created a Web site to provide comprehensive information and access regarding student financial aid resources for Arkansans. Fund My Future provides a free scholarship search and is a clearinghouse of information specifically for Arkansas nursing and education students.



“Fund My Future is a catalyst for addressing nursing and teacher workforce shortages in the state of Arkansas,” said Nancy Smith, director of marketing and operations for ASLA. “This
Web site streamlines college access, financial aid resources and employment opportunities for nursing and teacher students.”

"Good Night & Good Luck" is available on Reserve in the Taylor Library. George Clooney wrote, directed and starred in the 2005 historical drama. The film focuses on broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow's attempts to out Sen. Joseph McCarthy during the 1950's Red Scare. Ask for the film at the circulation desk in the library; UAM ID card is required.

The Wesley Foundation hosts lunch every Monday at noon at the Wesley Foundation house. The lunch is free and sponsored by local area churches.

Can it! - The Missionary Baptist Student Fellowship will be collecting used aluminum cans to raise money for needy African children.  Please take your cans to the MBSF.

The library hosts exhibits of University recognized student organizations. The Missionary Baptist Student Fellowship will have a display in the library for the month of November. To schedule a time for your student organization to display an exhibit in the library, please e-mail Mary Heady at heady@uamont.edu.

Access your grades via Campus Connect
by clicking on "Student Information and Links" at the UAM home page. UAM no longer mails grade reports to students at the end of the term. Any student who wishes to have a mailed grade report must complete a request with the Registrar’s Office prior to the last day of final exams (May 8). To receive mailed materials from the university, your permanent mailing address must be accurate.  For more information, call the Registrar’s Office at 460-1034.

Stafford Loan Borrowers - If you have borrowed a federal Stafford loan while attending UAM, and you will graduate in May 2008, transfer to another school following the fall 2007 term, be enrolled less than half time at UAM during the fall 2007 semester or no longer be enrolled at UAM following the fall 2007 semester, the federal government requires that you completed a mandatory exit counseling session within 30 days of completion of the spring term or within 30 days of withdrawing or falling below half time. Go to http://www.mapping-your-future.org and complete the Stafford exit counseling. Visit http://www.nslds.ed.gov to access your loan history. Please contact the Financial Aid Office at 460-1050 or come by Harris Hall Room 300 if you need help with this requirement.

Official Degree Audit - If you are seeking a baccalaureate degree and you have earned between 60 and 90 hours, you should meet with your academic adviser to complete a signed degree audit for your chosen major and minor (if applicable). Once you reach the 90-hour point, you will be unable to register for classes until a signed audit is on file in the Registrar’s Office. If you’d like to know the status of your degree audit (whether one is on file or not), please contact the Registrar's Office at 460-1034.

Praxis Test-takers - The Educational Testing Service announced Praxis test-takers will now only be required to pay a registration fee one time during a testing year. For more information, please visit the Praxis Web site.

MCB Pet - Assistant Professor of English Eric Buswell pointed out a bat on the outside of the MCB's east entrance by the Library. "The bat has been there for two days," Buswell said.

Writing Center - If you would like to improve your typing skills, make sure you visit our typing lessons link.  Fewer typos may mean an improved grade. Improving typing skills may also make writing papers more enjoyable. The Writing Center, located in MCB 113, is open 8-3 Monday through Friday. Our tutors are eager to assist students with any writing assignment. Please visit our Web site.

The Office of Finance and Administration keeps a formal log of vending machine problems on the Monticello campus. All drink or snack machine problems should be reported to Sharon Bulloch at 460-1023 or e-mail bulloch@uamont.edu. In addition to providing the location, please indicate if the Coca Cola machine contains cans or bottles when reporting problems.

Visit the Fred J. Taylor Library and Technology Center on the Monticello campus from 8 a.m.-10 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Friday, 1-4 p.m. Saturday and  2-10 p.m. Sunday.

The Patio Café now takes phone-in orders at 460-1376 Monday through Friday for lunch (11 a.m. – 2 p.m.) and dinner (4 – 7 p.m.). Visit the Web site for menus and prices.

Get a cup of Joe at Java City! The coffee shop inside the Taylor Library and Technology Center opens Monday - Friday from 7 a.m. - 3 p.m., and from 5-9:30 p.m. Sunday - Thursday. For more information, call 460-1876 or visit Java City online.
