Know the Rules

Public Safety - Officer Thomason enforces parking and traffic regulations.  Students were parked in the loading zone at Maxwell Hall.

The fall semester has new students on campus asking several questions concerning all of the rules, from parking tickets to the campus drinking policy.

First-year student Andrew McMillan asked, “What is the campus drinking policy?”

The University does not allow any alcoholic beverages or drinking on campus. If an officer has reason to believe that a vehicle contains alcohol in it, the alcohol may be confiscated. Firearms are also not allowed on campus inside vehicles; however the Public Safety office will store hunting rifles if requested.

Officers will write a campus ticket for campus violations. Students can pay campus tickets at the Public Safety office. Campus officers’ jurisdiction is the campus; however, their arrest authority is statewide. Public Safety has at least two to three officers on duty at all time during the day if help is needed.

Another frequently asked question among students pertains to officers pulling people over within city limits.

“If a person drives 80 in a 40, placing someone in harms way, then yes they have authority to give you a municipal ticket, which is paid at the courthouse,” said Chief John Kidwell.

Kidwell said he has noticed a problem with crosswalks and pedestrians this semester.

“A big problem we have seen since school has started this semester is students walking in the middle of the road,” he said.

Students should always use crosswalks when crossing the street or a citation will be given.

Other important rules students should remember are:

  • Standing outside after 10 p.m. is considered loitering. Students should return to their dorm room by that time.
  • Aug. 31 is the deadline to pick up a parking permit. However, students may request a temporary permit until Friday.
