The University of Arkansas at Monticello's Division of Music presented “Chamber Music Recital” in Harris Hall featuring faculty members Juan Serna, violinist; Linda Webster, pianist and clarinetist, Stephen Trana.

The recital opened with music from Edvard Grieg’s “Deux Melodies Nordiques” taken from his “19 Norwegian Folk Songs” and arranged by Oliver Miquel. Pieces from Ferenc Farkas’ “Hungarian Dances from the 17th Century” followed with arrangements by Stephen Trana based on transcriptions from Gabor. Other pieces included the “Suite from Voyageur sans bagages” by Darius Milhaud, “Danza de la moza donosa” by Alberto Ginastera, “Manha de Carnaval” by Luiz Bonfa and Antonin Dvorak’s “Humoresque.”

The three artists blended their expertise to provide the audience with a soothing aura of melancholy combined with a variety of lively, spirit- lifting pieces, which set the pace for a totally delightful evening of entertainment.

After a short intermission, the audience listened to performances by a clarinet quartet featuring Quartisha Johnson, Kelly Martin, Kelli Stevens and Vanessa Waite. The quartet featured pieces from popular composers such as Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Fugue in G-minor” or “Little Fugue,” Charles Gounod’s “Funeral March of a Marionette,” Scott Joplin’s “Entertainer” and Tchaikovsky’s “Danse chinoise” from the “Nutcracker Suite.”

Serna, Webster and Trana joined the quartet during the last two performances, which provided the audience with a spectacular finale.

More than 100 patrons filled the recital hall and lined both sides of the auditorium walls, which required the addition of several benches to provide for extra seating.
