The Arkansas Department of Education and the University of Arkansas at Monticello’s Graduate Council have formally approved an instructional specialist program in P-4 early childhood special education at UAM, according to Peggy Doss, dean of the UAM School of Education.

Licensed P-4 teachers can now take 18 hours of graduate level courses to receive licensure in P-4 early childhood special education.  Students must be admitted to UAM and to the School of Education’s graduate program to be eligible to take the courses.

“Special education is one of the critical need content areas in southeast Arkansas,” Doss said. “There is a tremendous shortage of licensed special education teachers in this area of the state. This program will serve a critical need for our public schools and students.”

For information about the program, contact Donna Hunnicut, Debbie Givhan or Doss at (870) 460-1062.
