Public Safety Provides Escort Service

Candace May
Staff Writer

Scared to walk from the John F. Gibson University Center to Bankston Hall by yourself late at night? Call the campus police to escort you.

If you are on the debate team or in any club or organization, sooner or later you will find yourself getting out of a meeting or returning from a trip late at night. It can be a little frightening to walk across campus by yourself. Although the University of Arkansas at Monticello has a low crime rate, the unexpected can happen.

So, if you find yourself getting out of a meeting late at night and are nervous about traveling alone, just pick up your cell phone and call the campus police at 460-1000. This number will direct your call straight to the on-duty officer’s cell phone after 4:30 p.m. Although they cannot transport you in their car, they will meet you and walk you safely to your destination. They will even stay on the phone with you until they reach you if you feel like you are in immediate danger.

You are not limited to calling if you are scared, Public Safety officer John Kidwell said. You can even call when it is storming and you have no way to get safely back to your destination. The escort service is not only for students but faculty and staff as well.

The only reason an officer could not come to your aid would be if he had been called away for an emergency elsewhere. However, Kidwell said, “We’re always going to take that call because a student or faculty’s safety is very important.”
