Breaking Loose - A Boll Weevil back takes off during the Homecoming game.

Staff Writer

After all the excitement and hype that is Homecoming, the University of Arkansas-Monticello Boll Weevils (1-7) lost in their last home game of the season 37-14.

The powerful rushing attack and relentless defense of the West Alabama Tigers (6-3) proved too much for the Boll Weevils.

“They just whooped our tails,” Coach Gwaine Mathews said. “We just didn’t play well.”

And the Weevils did just that.

The Boll Weevils struck first mounting a 12-play 81-yard drive capitalized by a 21-yard touchdown pass by Lafayette Fredrick to Jamie Dunn.  Fredrick finished the day with 134 yards and the one touchdown. The offense didn’t produce after that drive.

The Tigers’ defense took offense to the opening drive by shutting down the run, 37 attempts for 76 yards, and causing havoc in the backfield sacking the Weevil quarterback four times.

James Reiter’s scrambling ability and accuracy on short passes led the Tigers to 30 unanswered points. Reiter took the ball in for a score from 5 yards out in the first quarter after a 65 yard drive.  At the start of the second quarter, the Tigers capitalized on a turnover with a 3-yard touchdown run by fullback A.J. Holloway.  Mitch Warfield kicked a pair of field goals from 29 and 30 yards to finish up the first half.

UAM struggled to stop the run all game, allowing 252 yards.

The second half started out a defensive struggle for field position that ended when Reiter hooked up with Chris Coach on a yard touchdown pass. Reiter finished the day with 185 yards through the air, 54 on the ground and a pair of touchdowns. A 26-yard Warfield field goal made it a 30-7 ball game.

On an unusual play UAM defensive end Ricky Miller recovered a fumble and pitched a lateral to his opposite end Brandon Mayweather for a touchdown.

“We got a great defense capable of scoring on every play,” Miller said. “It could have been anyone but (the ball) happen to come to me.”

Trying to mount a comeback, UAM made a successful onside kick, but the drive ended when Tim Kelly recovered a fumble and took it in for a touchdown.  The game ended 37-14 Tigers.

UAM finishes the season on the road the next two weeks traveling to Valdosta Stats on Nov. 4 and Delta State on the Nov. 11.
