Weevils Hold Open Scrimmage

Paul Smith
Sports Information Director

Coach Mike Newell and the University of Arkansas at Monticello Boll Weevils basketball team will conduct an open scrimmage on Saturday, Oct. 21 at Steelman Fieldhouse. The event is free to the public and will begin at 2:30 p.m.

“We’d love for people to stick their heads in and take a look at the team,” said Newell. “We won’t be conducting drills, it’ll be a regular scrimmage with five 10-minute halves.”

Newell hopes that the Weevils will be able to exceed pre-season expectations again this year, as the Weevils were picked to finish second in the Gulf South Conference-West Division.

“Each year since I’ve been here, we have slowly but steadily improved in our pre-season polls,” said Newell. “And every year we’ve finished higher than we were picked. That’s going to be tough this year. It’s a sign that our program is headed in the right direction and has some consistency. We obviously would have liked to have been picked first, but all we can do is go out and play. If we can do like we’ve done every year, and finish higher than we were picked in the pre-season poll, we’ll win the division.”

The Boll Weevils will play their first game at home on Saturday, Nov. 18 against LeMoyne-Owen. A 7 p.m. tip-off is scheduled..
