Flyleaf Stays Positive

Sally Lybrand
Commentary Editor

Mention a Christian band and noses everywhere turn up in disgust. Unfortunately, this genre of music leaves a sour taste in the mouths of the masses.

Many Christian bands attain moderate success by writing songs that only appeal to church-going audiences. Some break onto the scene as Christian bands only to sell out to the popular movement of the moment. Sadly, the sour taste is justified.

Enter Flyleaf. This quintet from Belton, Texas unabashedly plays music with a positive message to any audience willing to listen. Flyleaf recently appeared on the Family Values bill, the summer hard rock tour famous for spotlighting bands such as Korn, Disturbed and Stained.

Flyleaf blends though provoking lyrics about pain, suffering, hope and redemption with heavy bass lines and thick guitar melodies. Their first major label release contains 12 songs spanning from frustrations of the world in “I’m So Sick,” to a worship ballad in “All Around Me.”

Do not expect any Bible beating from lead singer Lacey Mosely. She simply sings what is in her heart and mind while being mindful not to demean others.  This band is unapologetic with its message while satisfying the itch for heavy rock.

Catch Flyleaf on the Music as a Weapon tour with Disturbed and Stonesour in Nashville on Nov. 28 at the Gaylord Entertainment Center.
